AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is how local businesses get cited by AI search engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews when customers ask questions. It overlaps with SEO but optimizes for being quoted, not just ranked. The five moves that matter most: (1) FAQ schema on every page with FAQs, (2) direct-answer paragraphs in the first 100 words, (3) Organization + Person schema with a sameAs chain, (4) reviews flowing across Google, Yelp, and Facebook, and (5) presence in trusted third-party sources like Reddit and industry forums. Results take 90 to 180 days; anyone promising 30 days is overpromising.
Why this matters more than traditional SEO right now
In the last 18 months, the way customers find local businesses has shifted faster than the way most agencies talk about it. Three things happened, all in 2025 and 2026.
First, AI assistants started taking real share of search queries. The current public estimates put roughly 40% of search queries running through AI assistants instead of traditional search results, with the trend accelerating each quarter. A homeowner who would have Googled "AC repair near me" five years ago now asks ChatGPT or Gemini, and the assistant returns one or two recommended providers, not ten blue links.
Second, Google's own search results page now leads with AI Overviews. The familiar list of ten organic links has been pushed below an AI-generated summary that answers the query inside the page itself, citing two or three sources. If your business is not one of the cited sources, you are below the fold. Our AI Search page covers what this looks like in practice.
Third, in May 2026 Google released what it calls "AI Mode," which integrated Reddit citations directly into AI Overviews, added News Subscription Highlighting, and rolled out Preferred Sources globally. The net effect: traditional SEO signals (backlinks, domain authority) still matter, but they no longer determine who gets cited. New signals matter more.
Traditional SEO optimized for rank. AEO optimizes for citation. If you only do SEO, you can rank #1 and still not be cited in the answer that customers actually read.
What AEO is, plainly
Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring your content, signals, and presence so that AI search engines pick your business as the answer when a customer asks a question.
There are roughly six levers. Four of them are technical and ship-and-forget once deployed. Two of them are ongoing.
The technical four:
- FAQ schema on every page that has FAQs. AI engines parse this markup directly. A page with FAQ schema is roughly 20% more likely to be cited in AI Overviews than the same content without it, per current 2026 industry analysis.
- Direct-answer paragraphs in the first 100 words of every page. AI engines look for the answer near the top. If it is buried, they skip the page.
- Organization and Person schema with a complete sameAs chain (links to your Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, professional licenses, industry directories). This is how AI engines verify that you are a real, accountable entity, not a generic blog.
- EEAT signals built into the page: visible authorship, credentials, dateModified, references to authoritative sources. The acronym stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trust, and it is Google's published quality framework that AI engines now use to filter citation candidates.
The ongoing two:
- Review velocity and consistency across Google, Yelp, and Facebook. AI engines weight businesses with active recent reviews. A business with 47 Google reviews from the last 6 months gets cited over a business with 200 reviews all from 2023. See how reputation drives AI citations.
- Presence in trusted third-party sources, especially Reddit. Reddit drives roughly 24% of all Perplexity citations and a growing share of ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews citations, per January 2026 measurements. This does not mean spamming Reddit; it means being genuinely useful in industry-specific subreddits where customers ask questions.
How AEO is different from SEO
This is the question we get most often, so it is worth being precise.
SEO optimizes for rank: where you appear in a list of organic search results. The metrics are position 1 through 10 (and especially 1 through 3), click-through rate, time on page, bounce rate.
AEO optimizes for citation: whether you are quoted in an AI-generated answer. The metrics are citation count per query, citation share by engine, and citation recency.
They are not opposites. They share a lot of mechanics. Both reward authoritative content, clean technical setup, and trust signals. But they emphasize different things:
SEO asks: "Does this page deserve to rank for this query?" AEO asks: "Does this paragraph deserve to be quoted in the answer?"
The practical implication: a page optimized only for SEO can rank #1 and still not be cited by ChatGPT. Conversely, a page that ranks #8 organically but has clear direct-answer structure and FAQ schema may be the page that ends up cited in the Google AI Overview at the top of the same search results.
You no longer compete only for clicks. You compete for the sentences inside AI-generated answers. SEO gets you considered. AEO gets you quoted.
The five moves that matter most for local businesses
For a local service business or wellness practice, the AEO playbook reduces to five priorities. We rank them by impact-per-effort, because most local owners do not have unlimited time.
1. FAQ schema on every page with FAQs
This is the single highest-ROI technical change you can make. If your service pages already have FAQ sections (and they should), wrapping each Q-A pair in FAQPage JSON-LD markup makes them directly parseable by AI engines. Most CMS platforms have plugins that do this automatically. WordPress: Rank Math or Yoast both ship FAQ schema. Webflow: a single embed block. Static HTML: a 12-line JSON-LD script in your <head>.
Per current 2026 industry analysis, FAQ schema lifts AI Overview citation probability by roughly 20%. It costs nothing to deploy and the effect is durable.
2. Direct-answer openers in the first 100 words
Rewrite the first paragraph of every page so it answers the page's primary question in plain language. Not a marketing hook. The actual answer.
If the page is titled "AC Repair in Honolulu," the first paragraph should say what AC repair in Honolulu costs, how long it takes, and what is typically wrong. Then the page can pivot into your specific service. AI engines scan the top of the page for the answer; if they cannot find one in the first ~600 characters, they look elsewhere.
3. Organization and Person schema with sameAs chain
Add Organization schema to your homepage and LocalBusiness schema (a subtype) on any page about a physical location. Add Person schema to bios. Include a sameAs array linking to your Google Business Profile URL, your verified social profiles, your professional license lookup page if you have one, and your industry directory listing.
This is how AI engines verify identity. A business with a complete sameAs chain is treated as a verified entity; a business without one looks like a generic content page.
4. Review velocity that is actually flowing
AI engines weight businesses with consistent, recent reviews. Aggregate rating matters less than you think. Recency matters more than most agencies admit.
If your last Google review is 8 months old, you are signaling "this business may not be operating anymore" even if you have 200 historical reviews. Set up automated review request flows so every happy customer is asked within 5 days of service. Reputation Management covers this in detail.
5. Real presence in Reddit and trusted third-party sources
This is the move most agencies will not do because it does not scale and cannot be faked. The play: identify the 2 to 3 subreddits where your customers actually ask questions. Spend 30 minutes a week providing genuinely useful answers to real questions, using your real name and credentials. No link drops, no promotion. Just expertise demonstration.
The compounding effect is significant. A Reddit comment that ranks high in its thread gets cited by Perplexity and increasingly by Google AI Overviews for years. A single substantive comment can drive more AI citations than a 2,000-word blog post.

What AEO is NOT
A few things people often confuse with AEO that are not actually AEO:
- It is not paying for AI to mention you. ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity do not have ad systems in their main answers (yet). You cannot buy citations. Anyone selling you "AI ad placement" in May 2026 is either confused or running a different product.
- It is not just adding "AI-friendly content" to your site. AI engines are not impressed by content that mentions "AI" a lot. They look at structure, signals, and authority.
- It is not a one-time fix. The technical deployments are one-time, but reviews, third-party presence, and authority signals compound over months.
- It is not a replacement for traditional SEO. AEO sits on top of SEO. The signals overlap; the optimization targets differ.
Realistic timelines (and why anyone promising 30 days is wrong)
This is where we lose some clients before they even hire us. We refuse to promise 30-day AEO results. We will tell you why.
The technical changes (schema, direct-answer paragraphs, sameAs chain) deploy in days. But AI engines reindex on their own cadence. ChatGPT updates its training data periodically; Perplexity reindexes more often but still measures in weeks; Google AI Overviews reflects whatever Google's underlying index is doing, which moves on its own schedule.
Realistic ranges for a local business making the right changes:
- Days 1 to 30: Technical foundation deployed. No visible citation change yet.
- Days 30 to 90: First citations begin appearing for hyper-specific queries (your business name + location, your specific niche).
- Days 90 to 180: Citation share grows for broader queries (your service category + location). Review velocity and third-party presence start compounding.
- Days 180+: Full effect. You are cited consistently across all four major AI engines for the queries that matter to you.
Newer businesses without existing domain authority take the long end of these ranges. Businesses with existing authority and review volume compress them. Anyone promising results faster than 90 days is overpromising.
How this fits with the other 5 channels
AEO is one of six channels we think every local business should run together. The others are Local SEO and Google Maps, Social Media, Reputation Management, Content Production and Repurposing, and Email Marketing Automation.
They compound on each other. Reviews drive AI citations (channel 4 feeds channel 1). Content gives you the long-form pages that AI cites (channel 5 feeds channel 1). Local SEO and AEO share most of their technical foundations (channels 1 and 2 reinforce each other). Email keeps customers coming back to leave reviews (channel 6 feeds channel 4 which feeds channel 1).
If you only do AEO, you will get cited but the citations will lead to a thin website with no review velocity, and conversion will be poor. If you do AEO plus reviews plus local SEO, the same citation drives a much higher conversion rate because the visitor lands on a well-supported, trustworthy presence.
How to start (a 30-minute version)
If you want to do this yourself, here is the minimum-viable version in 30 minutes of work:
- 5 minutes: Open the page on your site that gets the most traffic. Read the first paragraph. If it does not directly answer what the page is about in plain language, rewrite it.
- 10 minutes: Add basic Organization schema to your site's
<head>. Schema.org and Google's structured data documentation have ready-to-paste templates. Include sameAs links to your GBP, Facebook, and any industry directory listing. - 10 minutes: Find your FAQ section (if you have one). Wrap each question-answer pair in FAQPage JSON-LD. If you do not have an FAQ section, add 5 to 8 of the questions customers actually ask you, and structure the markup.
- 5 minutes: Set a calendar reminder to ask your next 5 happy customers for a Google review within a week of service. Do this for a month and the review velocity will start showing up.
Those four changes alone, deployed consistently, will move the needle in 60 to 90 days. Not all the way; this is not the complete play. But it is the highest-leverage opening move.
The complete play (Manawave's 30-Day Setup Sprint) includes all the schema, all the EEAT signals, the Reddit cadence, the review automation, the email integration, and the measurement infrastructure that lets you actually see what is happening. For local businesses that want the full system without learning all of it themselves, that is what we built.
